Seminar Overview:

TData Science in the Space Industry - Careers and Applications - The modern space industry is rapidly evolving from a hardware-centric discipline into a data-driven and software-defined ecosystem. Today’s satellites and deep space missions generate vast amounts of operational and scientific data, requiring advanced analytics, optimization, and artificial intelligence to operate efficiently and create commercial or scientific value. Increasingly, techniques such as machine learning and AI-based decision-making are being explored for autonomous navigation, mission planning, anomaly detection, and onboard spacecraft operations.

This seminar presents practical examples of how data science methods—including optimization algorithms, probabilistic modeling, and reinforcement learning—are applied to real-world space missions and projects. The talk will also discuss how AI-driven planning and decision systems are shaping the next generation of autonomous space exploration. In addition, it outlines career pathways within the global space sector and provides strategic guidance for students seeking to apply their data science and quantitative skills in space technology and space-based business environments.

About the speaker:

Dr. Hippo YAM is a space mission design specialist with over 15 years of experience supporting deep space science and exploration missions to the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and Saturn. His work focuses on applying mathematical modeling, optimization, and algorithm development to real-world space missions and commercial space initiatives. He has contributed to both research and industry projects in mission planning and autonomous space systems, and actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering and emerging space technologies. He is also passionate about science outreach and sharing insights into the evolving global space industry.
