MSc(DDM) Expert Sharing Seminar Series -  Data handling in whole-mount 3D bio-imaging
4:00pm - 5:00pm
Lecture Theater F, HKUST

We are excited to have Dr. Teng ZHAO, CEO of Light Innovation Technology Ltd., to share the topic “Data handling in whole-mount 3D bio-imaging”.

All HKUST members are welcome to join.

Details are as follows.

Date: 3 November 2026 (Tuesday)

Time: Starts At 4:00 PM HKT

Venue: Lecture Theatre F, HKUST

Speaker: Dr. Teng ZHAO, CEO, Light Innovation Technology Ltd.

Moderator: Dr. Eric SAN, Lecturer, Department of Physics, HKUST

Seminar Overview:

Data handling in whole-mount 3D bio-imaging - Light sheet microscopy has fundamentally transformed three-dimensional microscopy, offering high imaging speed and minimal phototoxicity for large, cleared tissues and live embryos. The LiT light sheet microscope platform, adopted by more than 50 leading research groups worldwide, continuously generates large volumes of 3D to 5D imaging data. A central open challenge lies in processing, analysing and extracting actionable insights from such high-dimensional datasets. This seminar introduces the working principles and biological applications of light sheet microscopy, with a primary focus on the data-processing pipelines, software tools and computational infrastructure developed to manage these big imaging datasets. We will also discuss future opportunities at the intersection of this imaging modality and artificial intelligence.

About the speaker:

Dr. Teng ZHAO was awarded the Gladys Locke Prize for Applied Optics and completed his MRes in Optics and Photonics at the Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London in 2012. He obtained his MPhil and PhD in Physics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2016. He is co-founder and senior scientist of Light Innovation Technology Limited, where he focuses on the development and commercialization of advanced biomedical imaging instruments.
