Postgraduate Studentships
Postgraduate studentship (PGS) is awarded to qualified full-time PhD or MPhil student of the University to provide them with financial assistance during the course of their study. The amount of PGS is HK$225,120 (~US$28,860) per year (rate is for 2024/25 academic year). Other scholarships and awards are based on academic merit, English language proficiency, and the suitability of the research PG students for the proposed program of study, as is the selection of applicants for admission to postgraduate studies. In addition to research works, recipients of studentships are required to engage in teaching assistant (TA) duties in the Department of Physics, which is part of the program graduation requirements.
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)
To attract top quality students to pursue PhD studies in Hong Kong, the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) offers Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). The scheme is publicly funded and administrated by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC). Awardee of this Fellowship will receive stipend of HK$28,100 (~US$3,600) per month and travel allowance of HK$14,000 (~US$1,790) per year, and may have a chance to receive HK$40,000 (~US$5,120) of "Redbird Scholarship" (2024/25 admission cohort reference figure) in the first year of study. Research Travel Grants (RTG)
The University offers Research Travel Grant (RTG) program which intends to subsidy the cost of travel for postdoctoral fellows, research graduate students, and undergraduate students who present research papers at academic conferences and professional meetings around the world.
Full-time research graduate students who have been registered at HKUST for at least one year at the date of the conference/meeting are eligible to apply. The research work being presented at the conference/meetings must have been conducted at HKUST. Read More.
Overseas Research Awards
The Fok Ying Tong Graduate School (FYTGS) of the University will select a number of PhD students every year to receive an award for overseas research attachment program. The Overseas Research Awards for PhD Students aims to enrich students’ research experience by providing them with exposure to foreign cultures and environments, and widening their circle of professional contacts, so as to better prepare students for their future academic careers. RedBird PhD Award for newly admitted PhD students: HK$40,000 (~US$5,130) and a waiver of tuition fee in the first year.
Academic Excellence Award for current PhD students: HK$20,000 (~US$2,560) per year, subject to academic performance.
